Come Up With Your Self-Care SMART Goal

Published

“If we don't know how we're feeling, what drives us, and what our needs are, we can't set appropriate goals” - #healthynurse & health coach Camille Adair, RN.

No matter what self-care activity you incorporate into your day, it’s going to take some focus and dedication. Setting goals can help you keep your eyes on the prize.

Think about what you need to make your self-care activity happen, to make you successful. Do you have to shift your schedule around? Do you want to set expectations with loved ones? Once you've given your needs some thought, write down a Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound (SMART) goal for self-care and remember to start small:

Here's an example:

Specific “I want to start running.”
Measurable “I’ll run 3 times per week.”
Achievable “I can sign up for a 5K and walk it if I need to.”
Relevant “My provider recommended that I add more physical activity to my life.”
Time-bound “I’ll find a 5K in April 2024, so I’ll have at least 3 months to train for it.”

Taking the time to go through the letters in “SMART” can help you nail down exactly what you want to accomplish — and even better — how you’ll do it. It can also help you measure your success. Once you’ve decided on your SMART self-care goal, make sure to share it on the Healthy Nurse, Healthy Nation™ commitment wall! Don't have an account? Create one here.
