Walk It Out

Welcome to Day 1 of the Meditate, Activate, Rejuvenate Challenge, powered by Humana.

We’re kicking this challenge off strong with some movement. If you work in direct patient care, you’re already on your feet a lot, but that doesn’t mean your movement is giving you the same benefits that true heart-pumping exercise does.

This evening or if you have time tomorrow morning try to do a brisk walk — moving at a maximum speed of 4.5 mph — which can get your heart rate up and reduces your risk of:
  • Heart disease
  • Diabetes
  • Some types of cancer (bladder, breast, and colon cancer)

Studies also show that brisk walking improves cognitive health, too.
-
Make it your goal to go for a brisk walk for at least 10 minutes. Focus on building up some energy. Aim for 30 minutes if you can, but anything is better than nothing. Depending on the weather, try to get outside for a change of scenery and some fresh air. Nothing fills your cup like a dose of Mother Nature.

Need some inspiration? See how one 63-year-old nurse walked 25,000 steps per day and lost 130 pounds.

Share your experience in the challenge with us in the update thread here. Better yet, show us! You can post a photo from your walk in our private Facebook group, or on Twitter, or Instagram. Tag us with #healthynurse.

Want to share this post? Use the social media links on the left side of your page to share it with a nurse and invite them to join Healthy Nurse, Healthy Nation!

Stick with us! We’re just getting started. Join us on day 2.
